Our Beginning
From a Blog to a Publishing Powerhouse
If you would’ve told me thirteen years ago that I’d be the founder of a publishing company, I would’ve laughed. Back then, I was a single mom who had just been diagnosed with postpartum depression, trying to make sense of life one day at a time.
With the help of my holistic therapist, I eventually found my way back to writing: first through journaling, and then through blogging. That’s how Chasing A Baby And A Dream was born: a blog featuring life, love, and career advice from “the expert in what not to do.”
What started as an outlet quickly grew into something I didn’t recognize. Before I knew it, I was getting messages from readers who saw themselves in my stories, brands sending me products for honest reviews, and venues reaching out to book me for performances. Suddenly, my words — the same ones I wrote to keep myself grounded — were building something much bigger than me.
That push led me to pull together a small collection of poems and I decided to publish it on my own. I had no plan, no process, no mentor, and no real understanding of how the business worked. I just knew I had something to say. I made every mistake you can think of: formatting issues, copyright confusion, the works! But even with all that, I learned one important thing... my story mattered.
So, I tried the traditional route next. I thought maybe the industry would help me get it right. But what I found instead was a system that only honors the stories it knows how to sell. It wasn’t built to partner with visionaries or to hold space for people who are used to being silenced or unseen.
They told me my main character needed to be either Black or Spanish, because a story about an Afro-Latina woman finding herself was “too complicated.” In other words they thought that my story was "too much." There at that crossroad, I had to make a choice — I could play the game or change it. That’s how LexxiKhan came to life — a play on the word lexicon, meaning “language.” Because if they couldn’t speak ours, I was damn sure going to teach them how.
